🏛️ Local Spotlight: Ohio County Historical Society

📍 212 S Walnut St
🌐 https://www.ohiocountyhistory.org/

Right here in Rising Sun, the Ohio County Historical Society helps preserve the stories that shaped our town.

Housed in a historic 1800s building, the museum is filled with artifacts, photographs, and pieces of everyday life from years past.

Most of the items in the museum have been donated by local families, making it a true community collection that reflects the people and stories of Ohio County.

One of the most unique items on display is the “Hoosier Boy” racing boat, built right here in Rising Sun. On October 9, 1924, it set a speed record on the Ohio River — completing a 267-mile round trip between Cincinnati and Louisville in just 267 minutes and 49 seconds, averaging nearly a mile a minute.

The pilot, J.W. Whitlock, was a local furniture maker and inventor who built and raced the Hoosier Boy.

It’s a record that has never been beaten — and because races like that aren’t held today, it still stands.

Whether you’re interested in genealogy, local history, or just curious about how Rising Sun grew into what it is today, it’s a place worth stepping into.

👉 Sometimes the best way to appreciate our town… is to look back at where it started.
