♻️ Community Spotlight: Recycling + Free Store (Earth Day Week!)
In honor of Earth Day this week (April 22 🌎), here’s a local resource worth checking out:
📍 Ohio County Recycling Center
1432 Barbour Way (Industrial Park), Rising Sun
Along with regular recycling, they also offer a Free Store — a space where residents can:
👉 Drop off usable household items
👉 Pick up items they can use — completely free
You never know what you might find — items can include:
• Books and small household goods
• Home décor and kitchen items
• Clothing (clean and in good condition)
It’s a great way to reuse items and keep them out of the landfill.
♻️ Recycling is also available for:
• Cardboard, paper, magazines
• Plastic bottles (#1 & #2) and #5 plastics (yogurt cups, sour cream containers, etc.)
• Screened electronics (TVs, monitors, tablets) have a $15.00 disposal fee
• Battery Types: Rechargeable, lithium, and car batteries are accepted (car batteries must be capped)
• Alkaline batteries are not accepted
🕒 Hours:
• Mon, Wed, Fri: 1:00–6:00 PM
• Sat: 8:00 AM–12:00 PM
👉 A simple way to declutter, save money, and help the environment — all in one stop.
♻️ SEIRD Earth Day Raffle — April 20–25
Stop by the recycling center to enter for prize bundles and a grand prize.
👉 See flyer at the bottom for full details
👉 ♻️ SEIRD also offers scholarships for students making an environmental impact — see flyer below for details.
Inside the Free Store (Reuse Center) — a variety of clothing, household items, and more available at no cost.
⚾ Rising Sun Opening Day – April 25
This will be Rising Sun’s very first Opening Day celebration, and it’s shaping up to be a fun new tradition for the community.
The day will include a parade, picnic, and ballpark party—bringing everyone together to kick off the season.
Schedule of Events:
• 9:30 AM – Parade on Main Street
Each team will have a float or decorated vehicle to kick off the day.
• 10:15 AM – Pep Rally & “Float Vote” (Riverfront)
Support your favorite team by voting with donations — the winning team earns a banner displayed all summer.
• 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM – Picnic, Gear Swap & Main Street Activities
Bring lunch or grab food locally. A swap table will be available to share or pick up equipment.
• 12:30 PM – Field Day Fun at the Ballpark
Families and players can head to the fields for games and activities.
👉 A great way to kick off the season and spend the day with the community.
