Main Street Diner: 16 Years of Homemade Food and Local Ingredients

Main Street Diner — Open seven days a week, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

At 228 Main Street stands a building that has been part of Rising Sun since 1907. In the mid-to-late 1970s, Les and Donna Fogle transitioned out of their retail shop and opened the Snack Shack at this location, beginning a restaurant tradition that continues today.

After retiring 18 years ago, Mike settled in the Rising Sun area. He and Sandy eventually purchased the building and the Snack Shack business from Les and Donna Fogle. They opened the doors under their ownership as the Snack Shack on July 10, 2010, during Rising Sun’s annual car show.

They kept the name for a short time, but it created a little confusion. One day, a couple who had eaten at another establishment stopped in looking for ice cream, believing the Snack Shack served only ice cream and snack foods. That encounter convinced them it was time for a name that better represented the full menu—and Main Street Diner was born.

Mike says the restaurant has not closed for a single day since he and Sandy took over 16 years ago.

They take special pride in offering true farm-to-table food. Instead of relying on a traditional food-service supplier, Mike personally gathers ingredients from local farms.

The eggs and turkey come from nearby farms, while the free-range Angus beef is raised just six miles outside Rising Sun.

Sandy developed the recipes and takes pride in preparing everything in-house—even making the coleslaw for each order. The diner also makes its own sausage and smokes pulled pork, brisket, and turkey each week.

Everything is prepared fresh and cooked to order, so it may take a little time—but it is worth the wait.

One of my personal favorites is the pulled pork with slaw, followed by the homemade peach cobbler à la mode—if you still have room!

Another customer favorite is the No. 1 Omelet, filled with spinach, mushrooms, onion, black-pepper bacon, and mozzarella. If you have been missing Frisch’s Buddy Boy, try the Po’ Mike—a ham-and-Swiss tartar melt that rivals it, right down to the house-made tartar sauce.

Inside Main Street Diner, the walls are filled with local history, memories, and plenty of personality.

Over the years, visitors have come from across the United States and around the world. Colored pins on the diner’s map mark hometowns throughout the country, while notes surrounding it represent international guests. The owners estimate that people from approximately 60 countries have visited.

Visitors from across the United States to India, Russia, Scotland, Brazil, Turkey, Guatemala, Paris, London, and beyond!

Yet it remains, at heart, a hometown gathering place—serving food made from scratch with ingredients grown and raised close to home.

Sixteen years after opening, Mike and Sandy are still doing things the same way: supporting local farms, preparing food with care, and welcoming everyone who walks through the door.
