🏡 Welcome to Issue #38 of the Rising Sun Newsletter

Hello, neighbors!

Can you believe it's November already? Hope you're having a great week!

A Love Story — Doris and Eeyore

Last week, I shared my visit to Red Wolf Sanctuary. There were so many interesting stories that I wanted to share a few more with you this week!

Did you know black vultures mate for life? I didn't either, until I heard the touching story of Doris and Eeyore, two black vultures at Red Wolf Sanctuary.

Doris and Eeyore were already mates in the wild when Doris was injured and brought to the sanctuary. Somehow, Eeyore found her! He would pace back and forth outside her enclosure, trying to get inside to be with her.

Since Doris could no longer be released into the wild, the sanctuary went through the necessary paperwork to allow Eeyore to stay with her.

About a year later, a young vulture was brought to the sanctuary, and Doris and Eeyore raised him until he was old enough to be released. They named him Junior.

And here's the sweetest part. Junior still returns to visit, and Doris and Eeyore will even feed him through the fence!

Now that's a love story!

Todd the Fox and the Todd Squad

Todd has quite a story, too! He was being kept as a pet in the Cincinnati area when he escaped. A group of people formed what became known as the "Todd Squad" to find him.

They eventually located Todd and returned him to his owner, but he escaped again. This time, his owner didn't come back for him, so the Todd Squad reunited and helped get him to Red Wolf Sanctuary.

Cherokee and Crow

I also learned something interesting about coyotes. They often form lifelong pair bonds!

Cherokee and Crow are a pair living at the sanctuary. Crow prefers to stay in their den, while Cherokee comes out during feeding time. I was told he'll eat his portion and then carry food back to Crow.

And I can't forget Wilbur, the enormous mule! I had no idea there would be horses and mules along with all the other animals at the sanctuary.

Meet Wilbur, the sanctuary's gentle giant of a mule!

These are just a few of the wonderful stories I heard during my visit. Some animals are able to recover and return to the wild, while others have found a permanent home where they'll receive the care they need.

A big thank-you to Ella and Shealyn for such an informative tour!

If you haven't visited Red Wolf Sanctuary, I highly recommend it! And remember, the sanctuary is always in need of donations and volunteers.
